Key takeaways

  • SmallTalk2Me runs a full three-part IELTS Speaking mock in the browser and estimates a band on all four criteria within minutes.
  • Free accounts get 2 mock tests and only 1 band evaluation; Pro cost $35/month, $168 for 6 months or $252/year in USD as of October 2026.
  • Prices are localised: loaded from Bangladesh, the same plans showed Tk 1,700 a month, so check the price in your own country.
  • Its accuracy figures are company claims without a published method; two small academic studies praise its consistency and flag accent limits.
  • Verdict: 7/10. Strong for timed volume, weak on follow-up questions and on pronunciation heard by a person.
  • Pair it with at least one live mock: IELTSbiz runs 15-minute sessions with a real person from $3.

Short answer: SmallTalk2Me is a browser-based AI simulator that runs a full three-part IELTS Speaking test and estimates your band on all four criteria. It is worth it for high-volume practice, not as a final check. Free: 2 mock tests and 1 band evaluation. Pro: $35 a month or $252 a year (USD, October 2026).

Verdict up front: SmallTalk2Me is one of the more complete AI IELTS Speaking simulators in 2026. It runs all three parts in the real order, reports on the four official criteria, and puts an IELTS Writing checker in the same plan.

Its weak spots are the dollar price on short plans, questions written in advance rather than built on your answers, and accuracy claims with no published evidence behind them. Use it for volume, then check yourself with a human listener before test day.

Full disclosure before we start: IELTSbiz is our own platform, and it appears as an alternative near the end of this review.

Everything said about SmallTalk2Me below comes from its own website, its in-app pricing page as it loaded on 5 October 2026, two published academic studies and public user reports. We name the source for each claim so you can check it yourself.

Most other SmallTalk2Me reviews get the price wrong: directory sites quote anything from $10 to $40 a month, usually undated. The pricing page we loaded in October 2026 showed $35 a month in US dollars, with discounts only on longer plans and lower local prices in some countries.

What is SmallTalk2Me?

SmallTalk2Me is an AI speaking-practice platform run by SmallTalk Inc., a company based in California. Its About page says three engineers from Google and Yandex started it in 2020. The idea is simple: you speak into your microphone, and software transcribes and scores what you said, so you can practise without booking a teacher.

IELTS is its flagship use, but not its only one. The same account opens:

  • IELTS Speaking simulator: the full three-part test, scored on the four criteria.
  • IELTS Writing checker: Academic and General Training Task 1 and Task 2, with a countdown timer and a band estimate on the four writing criteria.
  • CEFR level test: a general English speaking test of about 20 minutes that returns a level from A1 to C2.
  • Job interview simulator and speaking courses: business English, conversational English and advanced speaking.
  • Speech Analyzer and Vocabulary Booster: free speech analysed for grammar, vocabulary and fillers, plus vocabulary practice.

That breadth matters because Writing is the other skill most candidates cannot mark for themselves, and one plan covers both.

Who should use SmallTalk2Me?

SmallTalk2Me fits a specific candidate well: someone at roughly Band 5.5 to 7 who knows the test format, has no regular speaking partner, and needs repetitions.

If you freeze in the Part 2 long turn or your Part 3 answers stop after one sentence, twenty timed attempts with feedback will help more than another strategy video.

It suits you less if you are a beginner who first needs to learn what each part is for, or if you are near Band 7.5 and the remaining gap is in how you argue and develop ideas; there, a person who pushes back on your answers teaches more than a score.

It is also a poor buy for one or two checks, because the first month is the most expensive way to pay.

How the SmallTalk2Me IELTS Speaking simulator works

An IELTS speaking simulator is software that copies the structure and timing of the Speaking test so you can rehearse it alone, then scores the recording. SmallTalk2Me's version works like this:

  1. Create a free account with email or Google. The free plan needs no card.
  2. Choose a test. Pick a built-in test set (Pro opens over 100 speaking and writing sets) or, on Pro, type in your own questions to rehearse the topics you dread.
  3. Answer all three parts into your microphone. Part 1 questions about you, the Part 2 cue card with a minute to prepare and up to two minutes to speak, then the Part 3 discussion. SmallTalk2Me suggests speaking for at least 15 minutes for the most reliable result.
  4. Read the report a few minutes later. You get an estimated overall band, a band for each criterion, a transcript with errors highlighted, and notes on fillers, linking phrases and vocabulary range.
  5. Replay and share. You can replay recordings, track progress over time on Pro, and send any report to a teacher with its share button.

Here is how that compares with the real interview, using the format IELTS publishes:

The real IELTS Speaking test vs the SmallTalk2Me simulator
Real IELTS Speaking testSmallTalk2Me simulator
Length11–14 minutes in three partsAbout 15 minutes of speech recommended for a reliable estimate
Who asks the questionsA certificated examiner, face to faceThe software, from a built-in test set or your own list
Part 21 minute to prepare, up to 2 minutes to speak, then the examiner may ask one or two questions on the same topicTimed preparation and a timed long turn
Part 3A discussion that takes the Part 2 topic further, often building on what you just saidQuestions from the chosen test set
MarkingFour equally weighted criteria, judged across the whole interviewFour criteria, estimated by AI from your recording and transcript
ResultAn official band on your Test Report FormA practice estimate within minutes

The structure matches well. The real difference is in Part 3. An examiner listens to your answer and decides what to ask next.

SmallTalk2Me describes its questions as coming from a test set or your own list, and it does not advertise an examiner that reacts to what you said. That is fine for practising longer answers, but it never tests whether you can handle a question you did not expect.

Our guide to Part 3 follow-up questions shows what examiners actually do there.

What the SmallTalk2Me report tells you

SmallTalk2Me says it transcribes your speech, then analyses fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation against the public IELTS band descriptors. In practice the feedback falls into two kinds.

  • Things you can check against the transcript. Grammar mistakes, repeated words, vocabulary range, synonyms, filler words and linking phrases are all visible in the text. If the report says you used "actually" nine times, you can count them. This is the most trustworthy part of any AI speaking report.
  • Things you have to take on trust. Pronunciation and the "flow" half of fluency are judged from audio by a model. You cannot easily check them, and they are where automatic scoring is weakest, especially if the transcript keeps mishearing you.

The second point matters more than most reviews admit. The IELTS Pronunciation criterion is not about sounding American or British. The public band descriptors judge how easily you are understood and how well you use features such as stress, rhythm, intonation and chunking.

At Band 8, "accent has minimal effect on intelligibility"; at Band 9 it has none. A model that has learned what a "standard" accent sounds like can mark down a clear speaker whose accent it hears less often.

SmallTalk2Me's own FAQ for its CEFR level test says it uses American English as its main reference standard, while also saying it recognises other accents fairly. So treat a low Pronunciation number on the IELTS report as a prompt to check, not a verdict.

Our guide to IELTS Speaking pronunciation covers what examiners actually listen for, and how IELTS Speaking is scored walks through all four criteria.

Is SmallTalk2Me accurate?

This is the question everyone searches, and the honest answer is that nobody outside the company can say how close its bands are to an examiner's, because the evidence has not been published.

What SmallTalk2Me says: its IELTS scoring model is "trained on thousands of real IELTS tests graded by certified examiners". Its 2026 blog comparisons describe the band as an estimate within about half a band.

We could not find a published study, sample or method behind that figure, so read it as the company's claim. Its IELTS page is also candid that your real result "will be close, but not guaranteed to match exactly".

What independent researchers found:

  • A 2023 paper in the TELL journal (Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya) interviewed three experienced English teachers and reviewed the literature. They credited the app with consistent, criteria-based assessment and immediate feedback. They also flagged two limits: app-based assessment "may not fully capture the intricacies of natural conversations", and its pronunciation scoring may struggle with different accents and speech patterns.
  • A 2024 study in Forum for Linguistic Studies followed 44 Saudi learners of English through six SmallTalk2Me practice activities over three weeks. Their IELTS speaking post-test scores were 12.12% higher than their pre-test scores, and they rated the feedback as motivating. It compared the same learners before and after, so it shows the practice helped. It does not show that the app's bands match an examiner's.

What users report: very little. The main Reddit thread on the subject, from 2023, has a subscriber asking whether the scores are reliable and another user saying it gives "reasonable pointers". Trustpilot lists a single review for the app.smalltalk2.me domain.

There is not enough public evidence either way, and that is worth knowing before you pay for a year.

You can test it yourself in a week:

  1. Repeat a test. Answer two similar test sets a few days apart. If the band swings by a full point while your speaking has not changed, that swing is noise.
  2. Give a deliberately weak answer. Use short replies, long pauses and basic words. The band should drop clearly. If it barely moves, the score is not responding to what matters.
  3. Read the transcript. If it often mishears you, discount the Fluency and Pronunciation numbers.
  4. Get one human opinion. Have a teacher or a live mock mark a fresh interview, and compare all four criteria, not just the overall band.

SmallTalk2Me pricing (as of October 2026)

SmallTalk2Me does not publish prices on its marketing site. They appear on the in-app pricing page and depend on where you are. In US dollars, this is what the pricing page listed in October 2026:

SmallTalk2Me Pro price in US dollars, October 2026
PlanBilled (USD)Per month (USD)Discount shown
Free$0$0None
Pro, 1 month$35$35None
Pro, 3 months$94.50$31.5010% off $105
Pro, 6 months$168$2820% off $210
Pro, 12 months$252$2140% off $420

Prices are localised. Loaded from Bangladesh, the same page showed Tk 1,700 a month, Tk 4,590 for three months, Tk 8,160 for six months and Tk 12,240 for a year, which is far below the dollar ladder. That may explain why third-party sites quote such different numbers.

Check the price in your own country before you compare it with anything else.

The billing rules, also from the pricing page:

  • Auto-renewal. Every plan renews automatically at the end of its cycle: monthly, every 3 or 6 months, or yearly.
  • Cancelling. Cancel any time under Menu, then Manage Subscription. This stops future charges and takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for.
  • Refunds. SmallTalk2Me says it will refund within 7 days of your first purchase if you contact support. Once a new cycle starts and you use the service, that period is not refunded.
  • Payment. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. PayPal is not accepted, and the page warns that many Indian bank cards need international transactions switched on first.
  • Discounts. 40% off annual billing, and a one-month 40% discount for referring five friends or posting about the product.
  • One person per account. Pro is for individual use, and sharing a login is not allowed.

As with most subscriptions, the monthly plan is the expensive way in. If your test is a month away, one month covers it; if it is three or more months away, the 3- or 6-month plan costs less per month, but cancel before it renews.

A full year only makes sense if you also want the general English courses.

Is SmallTalk2Me free?

Partly. Anyone can open a free account and try every feature, but the IELTS allowance is small. This is the free-versus-Pro split the pricing page showed in October 2026:

SmallTalk2Me free plan vs Pro, October 2026
FeatureFreePro
IELTS speaking and writing simulator2 mock testsUnlimited
IELTS band evaluation1 timeUnlimited
Custom IELTS speaking and writing testsNot includedIncluded

Read that closely: two mock tests, but only one band evaluation. The free plan is a real way to see what the report looks like and whether the transcript hears you well. It is a sample, though, not a study plan.

If you want free speaking practice you can repeat, our list of the best IELTS speaking practice websites covers the options.

What SmallTalk2Me does well

  • The full format, in order. All three parts with timing, which most speaking apps leave out. Talking non-stop for two minutes in Part 2 is a skill, and you only build it by doing it.
  • A report organised by criterion. Feedback is mapped to the four things examiners mark, so you can see which one is holding your band down instead of getting one vague score.
  • Writing in the same plan. Task 1 and Task 2 for Academic and General Training, with a timer and custom prompts.
  • Custom questions. On Pro you can type in the Part 2 topics you fear and rehearse exactly those.
  • No install, works on a phone. It runs in the browser on desktop and mobile, and reports can be shared with a teacher.

Where SmallTalk2Me falls short

  • The dollar price is high. At $35, one month costs more than many full courses. Value only arrives on longer plans, and those renew automatically.
  • A thin free tier. One band evaluation is enough to judge the product, not to measure progress.
  • Questions do not react to you. Test sets and custom lists are written in advance, so the unexpected follow-up, the part of Part 3 that rattles people, never gets rehearsed.
  • Pronunciation is machine-judged. It helps you spot a repeated sound error. It is less reliable as a band, especially for accents the model hears less often.
  • Accuracy is claimed, not shown. "Highly accurate" and "within half a band" come without a published method.
  • Few public reviews. With one Trustpilot review and a handful of Reddit comments, it is hard to judge billing or customer service before you buy.

What an AI simulator cannot rehearse

This applies to every AI speaking tool, ours included. IELTS has been computer-delivered only since 27 June 2026, but Speaking is still a live interview with a certificated examiner (see what changed in IELTS in 2026). Three things about a person in front of you change how you perform, and software cannot recreate them:

  • Follow-up questions. An examiner picks up a phrase from your Part 3 answer and asks you to justify it. Rehearsed answers fall apart there.
  • Pronunciation, actually heard. The examiner judges how easy you are to follow (stress, rhythm, intonation) in real time, not a model's estimate from a recording.
  • Nerves. Speaking to a stranger who is assessing you is a different task from speaking to a laptop at midnight. Many candidates find they speak faster and give shorter answers in the room. Our guide to IELTS Speaking nerves covers how to train for that.

That is why the strongest preparation usually combines the two: AI mocks for volume and fast feedback, then one or two sessions with a human listener in the final weeks. Our guide to taking an IELTS Speaking mock test with an examiner online compares the human options.

Verdict: 7/10

SmallTalk2Me earns a 7/10. As a simulator it is genuinely good: the three-part structure, the report by criterion and the bundled Writing checker make it one of the more complete AI tools for IELTS. If you need ten or twenty timed full mocks before your test, it delivers them at any hour.

The missing points are about trust and value: unpublished accuracy claims, machine-judged pronunciation, questions that never react to you, and a high dollar price month to month.

Use the free tests to check that the transcript hears you; if it does, a 3- or 6-month plan is reasonable for heavy practice. Just do not treat its band as the final word on whether you are ready.

The best alternative: IELTSbiz

Full disclosure: IELTSbiz is our own platform, so weigh this section accordingly. You can try every feature below before paying, and we say plainly what each one can and cannot do.

We offer both halves of the pairing described above:

  • A full AI-marked interview at /speaking/test: Part 1, the Part 2 long turn and Part 3 on one topic, recorded, transcribed and marked as one performance on the four official criteria, each marked separately. When your recording reaches the marker, Pronunciation is judged from the audio. When only the transcript does, the report labels it "Pronunciation (estimated)" instead of pretending. It is free to start within a monthly allowance and unlimited on Pro.
  • A live mock with a real person at /speaking/live: 15 minutes covering Parts 1 to 3 with a member of the IELTSbiz team over Google Meet or Zoom, marked against the public IELTS band descriptors, with written feedback on all four criteria within 24 hours. It costs from $3 a session with no subscription, Pro includes one session a month, and you can cancel up to 12 hours before. It is a practice mock, so the band is an estimate, not an official result. The free trial does not include a live session.

The live session covers what an AI simulator cannot: follow-up questions from someone who heard your answer, pronunciation judged by a listener, and real pressure before the real room. For daily volume, the AI interview or our timed cue-card practice does the job.

Pro is from $7.99/month, $19.99 for 3 months or from $50 lifetime (see pricing).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SmallTalk2Me free?

Partly. A free account lets you try every feature, but the IELTS allowance is 2 mock tests on the speaking and writing simulator and 1 band evaluation, according to the pricing page in October 2026. Custom tests, rephrasing tips and progress tracking need Pro. That is enough to see the report and check that the transcript hears you correctly, but not enough to track progress.

How much does SmallTalk2Me cost in 2026?

In US dollars, as of October 2026, SmallTalk2Me Pro costs $35 for one month, $94.50 for three months, $168 for six months or $252 for a year, and every plan renews automatically. Prices are localised: loaded from Bangladesh, the same page showed Tk 1,700 a month. Check the price in your own country, and note the 7-day refund window from your first purchase.

Is SmallTalk2Me accurate for IELTS Speaking?

Nobody outside the company can say, because no validation study has been published. SmallTalk2Me says its model is trained on thousands of examiner-graded tests and calls its band an estimate. Independent research is small: a 2023 paper based on three teachers praised its consistency but flagged accent and natural-conversation limits. Treat its band as a practice estimate and check that your transcript is accurate.

Can SmallTalk2Me replace an IELTS speaking teacher or mock examiner?

Not fully. It is strong for volume: timed three-part mocks and instant feedback on each criterion. It cannot ask follow-up questions based on what you said, judge your pronunciation the way a human listener does, or recreate the pressure of a real interview. Most candidates do best combining AI mocks with one or two sessions with a person in the final weeks before the test.

Does SmallTalk2Me have a mobile app?

It runs in the browser instead. Its IELTS page says the simulator works on both mobile and desktop with no app download, so you can practise on a phone with a microphone and a stable connection. For the most realistic rehearsal, use headphones and a quiet room, as you would for any recorded speaking practice.

Does SmallTalk2Me cover IELTS Writing too?

Yes. The same plan includes an IELTS Writing checker for Academic and General Training Task 1 and Task 2, with a countdown timer, a band estimate on the four writing criteria and line-by-line corrections. On a free account, the 2-mock-test allowance is shared across the speaking and writing simulator, so plan which tests you use it on.

How do I cancel SmallTalk2Me and get a refund?

Log in at app.smalltalk2.me and go to Menu, then Manage Subscription. Cancelling stops future charges and takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for. SmallTalk2Me says it refunds within 7 days of your first purchase if you email its support team; a renewed period you have already used is not refunded.

Should I use SmallTalk2Me or ELSA Speak for IELTS?

They do different jobs. SmallTalk2Me simulates the whole three-part interview and estimates all four criteria. ELSA Speak is a pronunciation drill app with IELTS courses and a Speech Analyzer on its Premium plan. If pronunciation is your weakest criterion, ELSA drills it more precisely; if you need format practice, a simulator fits better. Many candidates use one of each.
