Short answer: ELSA Speak is one of the best pronunciation coaches for IELTS; its Premium plan adds IELTS courses and a Speech Analyzer score mapped to IELTS. It trains mainly one of the four Speaking criteria rather than the whole timed interview. Premium lists at $99.99 a year on ELSA's web store (October 2026).
Verdict up front: ELSA Speak is the app to use when Pronunciation is the criterion holding your band down.
Its sound-level feedback is precise, the drills are short enough to do every day, and you can practise against a British or Australian model as well as an American one. It is not a complete IELTS Speaking tool.
Its IELTS features sit on the Premium plan, its IELTS-mapped score comes from short samples rather than an 11–14 minute interview, and its plan names and prices are confusing. Pair it with full mocks.
Full disclosure: IELTSbiz is our own platform, and it appears near the end of this review as the partner for the parts of the test ELSA does not cover.
The facts about ELSA below come from its own plan pages and web shop as they loaded on 5 October 2026, its App Store listing, and public user reviews.
We did not use a paid ELSA plan for this review, so we describe what ELSA says each feature does rather than claim test results of our own.
ELSA Speak for IELTS at a glance (October 2026)
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What it is | A pronunciation and speaking coach app for iOS and Android, plus a web Speech Analyzer |
| Accent models | American, British or Australian |
| IELTS features | An IELTS test-prep coach, IELTS and TOEFL courses, and a Speech Analyzer score mapped to IELTS, TOEFL, CEFR and TOEIC |
| Which plan has them | Premium and Professional. Not ELSA Pro, which is pronunciation coaching only |
| Free tier | Limited coaches, a 3-minute Speech Analyzer trial and a 7-day free trial of paid features |
| Web price (USD) | Pro $89.99 a year; Premium $99.99 a year list ($51 on offer when we checked); Professional $159.99 a year |
| Best for | Candidates whose Pronunciation band is lower than their other three |
That plan row is what most ELSA reviews miss. Many still describe an "IELTS Speaking Score Predictor" and quote older prices, and few say which plan the IELTS content is on.
In 2026, "ELSA Pro" is the pronunciation-only plan, while the IELTS courses and the Speech Analyzer sit on Premium. Buy the wrong one and you get no IELTS content at all.
What is ELSA Speak?
ELSA Speak (English Language Speech Assistant) is an app from a company based in Los Gatos, California. It listens to you say English words and sentences and tells you, sound by sound, which ones were off and how to fix them.
Its pronunciation library runs to more than 10,000 lessons organised around 22 core pronunciation skills, according to its plan comparison.
Around that core sit grammar and vocabulary coaches, shadowing exercises, short-video lessons, ELSA AI role-play conversations (on Premium) and the Speech Analyzer for longer, free speech. Explanations can be shown in your own language.
ELSA is aimed at professionals, job seekers, students and travellers as much as test takers, so IELTS is one use among many rather than the centre of the product.
ELSA's IELTS features in 2026: what actually exists
Three parts of ELSA are labelled for IELTS. Here is what each one is, and which plan opens it.
IELTS test-prep coach
ELSA's plan table lists a "Test Prep Coach" for IELTS (and OPIc, a speaking test used mainly in Korea), described with speaking templates and live interaction. Free accounts get limited use; Premium and Professional get unlimited use.
IELTS and TOEFL courses
Structured IELTS and TOEFL courses are on Premium and Professional only, and free accounts have no access. ELSA's catalogue groups IELTS with its other "certificate courses", such as U.S. Citizenship, Oxford and HarperCollins content.
Speech Analyzer
The ELSA Speech Analyzer is a tool that records free-form speech, such as a practice answer or a meeting, and scores it on five dimensions: pronunciation, intonation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary.
ELSA's web page pitches it for "IELTS/TOEFL speaking drills", and its App Store listing says the score is "mapped to major exams (IELTS, TOEFL, CEFR, TOEIC)". Free accounts get a 3-minute trial; Premium and Professional get unlimited use.
Older reviews describe a separate "IELTS Speaking Score Predictor". In ELSA's current App Store listing, the IELTS-mapped score lives in the Speech Analyzer. Whatever it is called, treat the mapping as an estimate from a short sample, not a band from an interview.
Does ELSA's score measure IELTS Pronunciation?
This is the question that decides whether ELSA is worth it for you, and it needs a criterion-by-criterion answer. IELTS Speaking is marked on four equally weighted criteria.
Here is how each one lines up with what ELSA measures, using the public band descriptors for the left-hand columns and ELSA's own feature descriptions for the right:
| IELTS criterion (25% each) | What the examiner judges | What ELSA measures | How much ELSA covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluency and Coherence | Speaking at length without too much hesitation, ideas in a logical order, linking that is easy to follow | Hesitation and filler words, in the Speech Analyzer | Partly: fluency, but not coherence or how you develop a topic |
| Lexical Resource | Range and precision of vocabulary, collocation, paraphrase | Vocabulary range against CEFR levels, in the Speech Analyzer | Partly |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | Range of structures and how accurately they are used | Grammar suggestions in the Speech Analyzer, plus a grammar coach | Partly |
| Pronunciation | How easily you are understood: individual sounds, stress, rhythm, intonation, chunking | Sound-level accuracy, word stress and intonation, practised against a chosen accent model | Strongly, with one caveat |
Two things stand out. First, ELSA's five dimensions are not IELTS's four. Two of ELSA's (pronunciation and intonation) fall inside the single IELTS Pronunciation criterion, and coherence, half of an IELTS criterion, has no dimension of its own.
A strong ELSA score can therefore sit alongside a weak IELTS band if your answers wander or stop too early.
Second, the caveat. You practise against an American, British or Australian model, but IELTS does not mark you against any accent. The public descriptors say that at Band 8 "accent has minimal effect on intelligibility" and at Band 9 it has none.
Band 6 allows individual words or sounds to be mispronounced as long as this "causes only occasional lack of clarity". In other words, the examiner cares whether a sound makes you harder to follow, not whether it matches a native model.
So read your ELSA results this way. A high pronunciation score is good evidence that you are easy to understand. A low score on one sound, say the "th" in "think", tells you there is something to fix, but not what it costs you in IELTS.
If listeners still understand you without effort, it may cost nothing. The sounds worth drilling are the ones that change meaning or make a listener work: confusing "ship" and "sheep", or dropping word endings so "walked" sounds like "walk".
The examiner also rates your average performance across all three parts, including a two-minute Part 2 long turn. Clear sounds in a single drilled sentence do not prove clear rhythm and stress over two minutes of unscripted speech, which is where tired speakers slip.
Our guides to IELTS Speaking pronunciation and how IELTS Speaking is scored go deeper, and fluency and coherence covers the criterion ELSA touches least.
ELSA Speak price in 2026: Pro vs Premium vs Professional
ELSA sells the same plans in three places, and the price changes with each. This is what ELSA's English web pages listed in October 2026, in US dollars:
| Plan | What it covers | Web price (USD) | IELTS content? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Limited lessons in each coach, a 3-minute Speech Analyzer trial | $0 | Limited test-prep coach only |
| ELSA Pro | "Pronunciation Coaching Only": 10,000+ lessons across 22 pronunciation skills, advanced feedback, progress tracking | $89.99 a year; a 3-month pass is $46.99 in the ELSA Shop | No IELTS courses, no Speech Analyzer |
| ELSA Premium | Pronunciation plus everyday English: unlimited coaches, ELSA AI role-plays, IELTS and TOEFL courses, unlimited Speech Analyzer | $99.99 a year list; $51 in the ELSA Shop when we checked (48% off) | Yes |
| ELSA Professional | Everything in Premium plus career coaches for interviews, presentations, meetings and sales | $159.99 a year | Yes |
Where you buy matters as much as which plan you buy:
- The subscriptions page on elsaspeak.com sells yearly Pro ($89.99) and Premium ($99.99) subscriptions.
- The ELSA Shop sells the plans as one-time passes. When we checked, it listed Premium at $51 for a year, less than Pro, so look there before you buy Pro by default.
- The App Store and Google Play have their own prices. ELSA's US App Store listing showed in-app options from $19.99 a month, 3-month options from $39.99 to $58, and yearly options from $71 to $129.99. These vary by country, currency and promotion.
On lifetime access: ELSA's Vietnamese site advertises a lifetime ELSA Pro plan ("Trọn Đời"), but the English web shop listed no lifetime plan in October 2026. If you see a lifetime offer, check which plan it unlocks. Lifetime Pro would still not include the IELTS courses or the Speech Analyzer.
Both the pricing page and the Professional page advertise a 7-day free trial. Some Trustpilot reviewers report unexpected charges around the end of a trial, so set a reminder a day before yours runs out if you are not sure you want to continue.
Is ELSA Speak free?
There is a useful free tier. A free account gets a limited number of lessons in each coach, limited use of the IELTS test-prep coach and a 3-minute Speech Analyzer trial.
ELSA also runs a free web speaking assessment: you read sentences aloud and get a quick view of your pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary in under two minutes.
For IELTS, the free tier is enough for the most valuable first step: finding out which sounds you actually get wrong. Plenty of candidates discover that their problem is two or three specific sounds or word-stress habits, not a general "accent problem". Knowing that is half the fix, and it costs nothing.
Which ELSA plan is right for IELTS?
- Pro, if you only want the drills. If you will do your full mocks elsewhere and only need sound and stress practice, Pro's lesson library is the valuable part of ELSA.
- Premium, if you want the IELTS layer. The IELTS courses, the test-prep coach and the Speech Analyzer score are only here. At the shop price we saw, it was also cheaper than Pro.
- Professional, only for work English. Its extra coaches are for interviews, presentations and meetings, not for IELTS.
What ELSA does well
- Precise sound-level feedback. It identifies the exact sound or syllable that went wrong, which a recording alone cannot show you.
- Short daily drills. Lessons take minutes, which suits a study plan that already has Reading, Writing and Listening in it.
- A choice of accent model. American, British or Australian, so you are not pushed towards one accent.
- Word stress and intonation. Two features the IELTS descriptors name explicitly, and two that most learners never practise on purpose.
- A big library. More than 10,000 lessons means you will not run out of material.
- Explanations in your language. Helpful at lower levels, where English-only instructions slow you down.
Where ELSA falls short for IELTS
- No full timed interview on its plan pages. None of the pages we checked describes a three-part mock with a Part 2 long turn and Part 3 discussion, which is the format you are actually tested in.
- One criterion, mostly. Coherence, topic development and much of Lexical Resource and grammar are only lightly covered.
- A native model, not an intelligibility test. Low scores on sounds that do not hurt clarity can send you drilling things the examiner will not mark you down for.
- Confusing plans and prices. Pro is not the top tier, Premium can cost less than Pro, and the price depends on where you buy.
- Billing complaints. ELSA's Trustpilot page scored 2.4 out of 5 from 32 reviews in October 2026, two-thirds of them one-star, mostly about trial charges, cancellation and refunds. That is a small sample next to the 4.8 out of 5 from about 113,000 App Store ratings, and both are user reports, but read the renewal terms before you subscribe.
How to pair ELSA with full IELTS Speaking mocks
The useful question is not "ELSA or a mock test?" but "what does each one do in my week?" Here is a pairing that uses ELSA for what it does best:
- Take one full mock first. Find your weakest criterion before you buy anything. A full interview, AI-marked or with a person, shows whether Pronunciation is really the problem.
- Use ELSA only if Pronunciation is your lowest criterion, or within half a band of it. If coherence or vocabulary is lower, ELSA is the wrong tool for now.
- Drill 10–15 minutes a day on the sounds and stress patterns ELSA flags, with the accent model closest to how you naturally speak.
- Move the sounds into long speech. Once a week, record a full two-minute Part 2 answer and listen for the same sounds. This is where drilled sounds slip.
- Re-take a full mock every week or two and check whether your Pronunciation band moves, and whether the other three criteria keep up.
- Have a person listen before test day. A live mock tests whether you are easy to understand under pressure, which is what the examiner actually judges.
For the general speaking habits that cost marks across all four criteria, see common IELTS Speaking mistakes.
Verdict: 7.5/10 for IELTS candidates
As a pronunciation trainer, ELSA is among the best you can buy: precise, quick to use every day, and flexible about accent.
For IELTS specifically, it earns a 7.5/10, because it covers one criterion deeply and the other three lightly, its IELTS-mapped score comes from short samples, and its plans make it easy to pay for the wrong thing.
Buy it, on Premium if you want the IELTS layer, when a mock has shown that pronunciation is what is holding you back. Do not buy it as your only Speaking preparation.
If your band is stuck at 6 to 6.5 for reasons other than pronunciation, our guide to moving IELTS Speaking from Band 6 to 7 is a better starting point.
The best partner for the rest of the test: IELTSbiz
Full disclosure: IELTSbiz is our own platform, so weigh this section accordingly. We are not a pronunciation drill app, and we do not pretend to be one. What we cover is the part ELSA leaves out: the whole interview, marked on all four criteria.
- A full AI-marked interview at /speaking/test: Part 1, the Part 2 long turn and Part 3 on one topic, marked as one performance on the four official criteria, each marked separately. When your recording reaches the marker, Pronunciation is judged from the audio; when only the transcript does, the report labels it "Pronunciation (estimated)". It is free to start within a monthly allowance and unlimited on Pro.
- A live mock with a real person at /speaking/live: 15 minutes covering Parts 1 to 3 with a member of the IELTSbiz team over Google Meet or Zoom, marked against the public band descriptors, with written feedback on all four criteria within 24 hours. It costs from $3 a session, Pro includes one a month, and you can cancel up to 12 hours before. It is a practice mock, so the band is an estimate and not an official result. The free trial does not include a live session.
The pairing is simple: ELSA for the sound drills, full mocks to check that those sounds survive two minutes of real speech and a listener's ear.
Pro is from $7.99/month, $19.99 for 3 months or from $50 lifetime (see pricing), and the timed cue-card practice is a quick way to rehearse Part 2 between full mocks.
