Behind the marking

How does the IELTS Writing Checker work?

Our AI examiner assesses your essay using the same four criteria that official IELTS examiners use: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Your overall band score is the average of these four, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Unlike generic grammar checkers, this tool understands IELTS-specific requirements — such as whether you have a clear position, whether your paragraphs are logically sequenced, and whether your vocabulary is sufficiently varied for a Band 7+ score.

The tool also rewrites your weakest paragraph to Band 8 standard, so you can see exactly what the examiner expects — not just in abstract terms, but applied directly to your own writing.

To get the most accurate score, paste the full essay question along with your essay. The AI needs the prompt to assess Task Response accurately.

Methodology & sources

How your essay is graded

Your essay is assessed against the four criteria that official IELTS examiners use for the Academic and General Training Writing test. Each criterion is scored on the 9-band scale and your overall Writing band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. The scoring follows the public IELTS Writing band descriptors — the same criteria and weighting published by the official IELTS partners — not a generic grammar score.

The four criteria are weighted equally, so a strong essay needs balance across all of them rather than excelling at just one.

The 4 official IELTS Writing criteria

Task Achievement / Task Response

Whether you fully answer every part of the question, take a clear position, and support it with relevant, developed ideas. Task 1 uses "Task Achievement"; Task 2 uses "Task Response".

Coherence & Cohesion

How logically your ideas are organised and linked — clear paragraphing, a sensible progression of ideas, and accurate use of cohesive devices and referencing.

Lexical Resource

The range, precision, and natural use of your vocabulary, including less common words and collocations, and how well you avoid repetition and errors in word choice or spelling.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The variety of sentence structures you control and how accurately you use them — including tense, agreement, articles, and punctuation.

How to read your score honestly

This tool gives an AI estimate trained on the official band descriptors. It is a reliable indicator of your current level and where to focus, but it is not an official IELTS result — only a certified examiner can issue your real band. Paste the full essay question with your essay so Task Response can be judged accurately, and track your score across several essays to see genuine progress.
