UK Immigration Guide · Updated May 2026
IELTS for UK Visa 2026
Different UK visa routes require completely different IELTS tests — and confusing them costs you time and money. This guide covers every route: student visa, NHS nursing, doctors, skilled worker, spouse visa, and UK settlement.
Important: Three different IELTS tests exist for UK purposes
IELTS Academic
For university admissions and professional registration (NMC, GMC). Tests all 4 skills.
IELTS General Training
For work and migration contexts — but NOT accepted for UK Home Office visa routes.
IELTS Life Skills
A Secure English Language Test (SELT) for most UK visa routes. Tests Speaking & Listening only.

UK Student Visa
- IELTS Academic is required — not General Training
- The university (not the Home Office) sets the exact band
- Most undergraduate courses need Band 6.0–6.5
- Postgraduate and competitive courses: 6.5–7.5
- Top universities (Oxford, Cambridge) often require 7.0+
- Some departments require minimum per-skill scores (e.g. 6.5 in Writing)
NHS Nurse — NMC Registration
- NMC requires IELTS Academic — not General Training or Life Skills
- Minimum 7.0 in every skill: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking
- No single skill can be below 7.0 — overall 7.0 is not sufficient
- Results must be from a single sitting (no combining tests)
- Test must be taken within 2 years of NMC application
- OET (Occupational English Test) is an accepted alternative
NHS Doctor — GMC Registration
- GMC requires IELTS Academic 7.5 overall
- No individual skill may fall below 7.0
- Results valid for 2 years from test date
- OET Medicine is an accepted alternative to IELTS
- Applies to all overseas-trained doctors applying for GMC registration
- Specialists in surgery, medicine, and psychiatry all follow the same standard
Skilled Worker Visa
- Most Skilled Worker applicants need B1 English (CEFR)
- Home Office requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT)
- IELTS Life Skills B1 is a SELT — IELTS Academic is NOT accepted
- Life Skills tests Speaking and Listening only (not Reading or Writing)
- Exemptions: nationals of majority English-speaking countries; degrees taught in English
- Healthcare workers must also separately meet NMC/GMC requirements
Spouse / Partner Visa
- Entry clearance (coming to UK): A1 Secure English Language Test
- Leave to remain extension: A2 SELT required
- IELTS Life Skills A1 and A2 are accepted SELTs for these routes
- Tests Speaking and Listening only
- Results valid for 2 years
- No exemptions based on country of birth (unlike other visa routes)
UK Settlement (ILR) & Citizenship
- Indefinite Leave to Remain requires a B1 SELT or Life in the UK Test
- IELTS Life Skills B1 is the most popular choice
- Tests Speaking and Listening only — no Writing or Reading component
- For British citizenship, both the Life in the UK Test AND B1 SELT are required
- Test results valid for 2 years
- Must be taken at an approved SELT centre in the UK
IELTS Academic vs General Training
Both use the same 1–9 band scale, but the Reading and Writing papers are different. Academic is harder and required for university and professional registration. General Training is used for skilled migration — but not for UK Home Office visas.
IELTS Academic — use for:
- UK university admissions
- NMC nurse registration
- GMC doctor registration
- Other professional registration bodies
- Some postgraduate scholarships
IELTS Life Skills — use for:
- UK Skilled Worker visa
- UK Spouse/Partner visa
- UK Settlement (ILR)
- British citizenship application
- Family reunion routes
Preparing for Your Target Score
If your target is Band 7.0 (NMC nursing)
Band 7.0 in all four skills is demanding. Writing is typically the hardest component — most candidates who fail NMC IELTS fail on Writing. Start with an AI essay checker to get a baseline and identify exactly which criterion is holding you back.
Check your writingIf your target is Band 6.5 (Russell Group)
Band 6.5 is achievable with 6–8 weeks of focused practice. Reading tends to be the quickest skill to improve — question-type strategies such as True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings give fast wins that directly raise your score.
Practice readingFor IELTS Life Skills (B1)
IELTS Life Skills is conversational — it tests practical Speaking and Listening in real-world contexts (giving opinions, describing plans, understanding announcements). Most candidates with B1-level English pass on their first attempt with 2–3 weeks of familiarisation.
Know your starting point
Before you book your test, do a full practice test to estimate your current band. Then calculate how much time you need to reach your target.

Do I need IELTS for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
For most UK Skilled Worker visa routes, you need to demonstrate English at B1 level. However, for many applicants from majority English-speaking countries, or those who hold a degree taught in English, an exemption applies. Healthcare professionals must separately meet their regulatory body's English requirements (NMC or GMC), which are higher than the visa requirement.
What IELTS score does an NHS nurse need?
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requires overseas-trained nurses applying to register in the UK to achieve IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall, with no individual component — Reading, Writing, Listening, or Speaking — below Band 7.0. This applies even if you come from a country where English is spoken.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training for UK visa?
IELTS Academic is required for university admissions and professional registration (NMC, GMC). IELTS General Training is used for work and migration. For UK Home Office visa routes (spouse, settlement, skilled worker), neither Academic nor General Training is typically accepted — you need IELTS Life Skills, which is a separate Secure English Language Test (SELT).
What IELTS score do I need for UK settlement (ILR)?
For Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR / UK settlement), you need to pass the B1 Secure English Language Test or the Life in the UK Test. IELTS Life Skills B1 is the accepted SELT for this route. You need to pass Speaking and Listening components — Writing and Reading are not tested in IELTS Life Skills B1.
How long does IELTS last for UK visa purposes?
IELTS results are valid for 2 years from the test date. For UK visa and immigration purposes, your SELT (Secure English Language Test, including IELTS Life Skills) results are valid for 2 years. For university admissions, institutions may accept scores from within the last 2–3 years.
