Short answer: the best IELTS preparation software for a PC or laptop in 2026 is IELTSbiz, which runs in any browser on Windows, Mac or a Chromebook with nothing to install and covers all four papers.
Pair it with the free official familiarisation tests to learn the real interface, and Anki on the desktop for vocabulary.
Disclosure: IELTSbiz is our product, and we rank it first. If what you want is a downloadable program, we explain below why that is usually the wrong thing to look for.
People search for an "IELTS preparation app for laptop download" because phone apps feel cramped for 40-question papers and 250-word essays. That instinct is right.
With IELTS delivered on computer, the laptop is where the test happens: you read passages on screen, type your essays, and answer Listening on screen. Practising on the same kind of device is part of the preparation.
| Software | Windows / Mac | Best for | Cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTSbiz | Any browser; add to desktop | All four papers with marking and tracking | Free to start; from $7.99/month |
| Official familiarisation tests (IDP, British Council) | Browser | Learning the real computer interface | Free |
| British Council IELTS Ready | Browser | Official mocks | Free tier; more with a booking |
| ieltsonlinetests | Browser | Many timed computer-style mocks | Free; AI marking from $4.99 |
| Magoosh IELTS | Browser | Video lessons on a big screen | $109 for 1 month or $129 for 6 months |
| Anki | Desktop app (Windows, Mac, Linux) | Vocabulary with spaced repetition | Free on desktop |
Why the best IELTS software for PC is not a download
Almost all serious IELTS preparation moved to the browser years ago. A browser tool works the same on Windows, Mac and Chromebook, updates itself, keeps your progress when you switch to your phone, and needs no administrator rights on a shared or office computer.
The few downloadable "IELTS software" packages still circulating are mostly old CD-ROM content or, worse, repackaged files from unofficial sites. None of them is needed. If a site asks you to download an .exe to practise IELTS, close it.
The one exception is vocabulary: a desktop flashcard app like Anki is genuinely better installed, and it is free and open source.
1. IELTSbiz - Best IELTS software for laptop and PC
IELTSbiz runs in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox on any laptop.
On a big screen it behaves like the computer-delivered test: a full 40-mark Reading test with the passage and questions side by side, one-play Listening marked to a band, and Writing typed on screen, as it is in the test.
Every wrong Reading answer comes back with the trap named, and your band is tracked per question type on the progress dashboard.
Typing matters more than most candidates expect: if you write at 25 words a minute, the 40-minute Task 2 is already tight. The free IELTS typing test measures your speed on IELTS-style text, and the Writing Checker marks what you typed on all four criteria.
From Chrome or Edge you can install the site to your desktop so it opens in its own window. It is free to start with no card; Pro is from $7.99/month or from $50 lifetime.
2. Official familiarisation tests - Best for learning the interface
IDP and the British Council publish free computer-delivered IELTS familiarisation tests that use the real on-screen layout: how you highlight text, how answers are entered, how the clock and question navigation look. Sit one at least once before your test so nothing on the day is new.
They are short samples, so they are for the interface, not for volume. Our guide to computer-based IELTS practice links them.
3. British Council IELTS Ready - Best official mocks on PC
IELTS Ready runs in the browser and gives a free Mini Mock plus two full mock tests on the free tier as of September 2026, with more after a British Council booking. On a laptop it is the most authentic full mock you can sit. See our IELTS Ready review.
4. ieltsonlinetests - Best for many timed mocks
A large free library of computer-style Reading and Listening mocks, with AI Writing and Speaking marking from $4.99. It is the cheapest way to build stamina on screen. Expect ads on the free tier.
5. Magoosh IELTS - Best video course on a big screen
Magoosh's 120+ video lessons are far easier to follow on a laptop than a phone, and its mocks and AI writing grading come with them, at $109 for one month or $129 for six as of September 2026.
6. Anki - Best desktop vocabulary app
Anki is free on Windows, Mac and Linux, syncs to your phone, and schedules each word for review just before you would forget it. Shared IELTS decks are a start; cards you make from words you met in practice stick better. Pair it with the daily Word Coach, which pushes words into active use.
Setting up your laptop for IELTS practice
Use a wired or reliable headset for Listening, because the test centre will give you headphones. Practise Writing with spellcheck off, since the real test has none. Sit at a desk, not a sofa, for full papers.
And do at least one full paper on the laptop every week in the final month, so reading on screen for an hour feels normal.
