IELTS Speaking Part 1: Animals and nature
A rotating set about animals, pets and the outdoors. It tests vocabulary for wildlife and childhood memories in the past simple.
Questions and sample answers
1. Are there many animals where you live?
Not many wild ones, since I live in a big city. You mostly see stray dogs and cats, and a lot of crows.
2. Did you ever have a pet when you were a child?
Yes, we had a cat called Mishti when I was about eight. She was very independent, but she always slept at the end of my bed.
3. Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature?
Very much. Whenever I get the chance I go to a park or out to the countryside. Even an hour among trees clears my head.
4. Do you think children should learn more about wild animals?
Definitely. If children understand wildlife early, they’re far more likely to care about protecting it as adults.
Each sample is two to four sentences: the answer, a reason or example, then stop. Use them to hear the shape, not to memorise. Examiners are trained to spot a rehearsed answer, and it costs fluency marks.
Language this topic rewards
- stray animals / wildlife: Precise nouns for city and wild animals.
- when I was little, we had …: Opens a childhood memory naturally.
- it clears my head: An idiom for why nature helps.
- endangered species / habitat loss: Topic vocabulary for the opinion question.
- they’re far more likely to …: Supports an opinion with a consequence.
The trap on this topic
Mixing tenses in the childhood question: "When I was eight we have a cat." Past events need past tense throughout. This set exposes that error more than any other.
Answer these out loud and get marked
The Part 1 practice runs the interview the way the examiner does: your work or studies first, then two topic sets. It records you, transcribes what you said and marks it on the four official criteria.
