Verdict up front: Mini IELTS is a fast, free, no-sign-up place to practise single Reading passages and Listening sections, many labelled "Recent Actual Tests". For early exposure it is excellent value.
It does not mark Writing or Speaking, its solutions are public, and its Reading list has not added a passage since March 2024. We rate it 7/10. Our top pick is IELTSbiz, which never runs out of passages and tells you why each answer was wrong.
We have separate guides on using Mini IELTS for Reading and Mini IELTS for Listening. This page answers the broader question: is the site any good, and is it enough?
What is Mini IELTS?
Mini IELTS (mini-ielts.com, with a hyphen) is a free practice site for IELTS Reading and Listening. You can take tests "as many as you want for FREE", with no registration.
Reading items are single passages of 13 or 14 questions, each labelled with its question types and linked to a "View Solution" page; Listening items are 10-question sections. You can filter Reading by question type.
The site also offers lessons, tips and model answers, and links out to separate sites for full-length tests and PTE practice.
What does Mini IELTS do well?
Zero friction. No account, no card, no paywall. You can be answering questions within seconds, which is the right way to start.
Question-type labels. Every passage tells you what you are about to practise (for example "7 TRUE-FALSE-NOT GIVEN, 6 summary completion"), and the filter lets you pick a type to work on. Few free sites do this.
Short sessions. A single passage is a 20-minute session, which fits a busy day better than a full paper.
Where does Mini IELTS stop?
The library is not growing quickly. On 13 October 2026 the newest Reading passage on its list was dated 28 March 2024, with most of the first page from 2023. If you study daily, you will reach the end of what is relevant to you.
Solutions are public. Every test has its answers one click away. Once you have seen a solution, a retake tests recall, and recall inflates your score in exactly the direction you do not want before a booked test.
Reading and Listening only. There is no marking of your own Writing or Speaking. Model answers show you a good essay; they do not tell you what yours would score.
A score, not a diagnosis. You see which answers were wrong, but not which trap caught you, and nothing tracks your level on each question type over time.
Verdict: 7/10
Mini IELTS earns 7/10. It is one of the best zero-friction starting points in IELTS prep, and its question-type labels are genuinely useful. It loses points because the material is not growing, the answers are public, and half the test is not covered at all.
The best alternative: IELTSbiz
Disclosure: IELTSbiz is our own platform. Here is what it gives you that Mini IELTS cannot:
- Passages nobody has seen. Each Cambridge-style passage is generated fresh, so there is no public solution to have half-read and no end to the material.
- The reason for every miss. Each wrong answer names the trap that caught you and quotes the line of the passage that settles it.
- A band for each question type. Mini IELTS lets you filter by type; IELTSbiz tracks your estimated band on each of the 11 types over time.
- All four papers. Listening Parts 1–4 played once, the Writing Checker marking four criteria separately with your sentences quoted, and a full three-part Speaking test.
- Still free to start. Every paper is free within an allowance, no card. Pro removes the limits from $7.99/month or $50 lifetime.

How to use Mini IELTS well
Do each passage once, timed, before you ever open its solution, and record your score by question type in a notebook. Never redo a passage you have reviewed. When you find the type that keeps costing you, move that type to a source of fresh material.
And remember the obvious gap: a Reading score without a Writing score is half a picture.
