Short answer: Describe pie charts with the language of proportion: each segment "accounts for" or "makes up" a share of the whole. Write an overview naming the dominant segment and the biggest shift, then group the detail so each segment's figures sit together. Paraphrase key percentages as fractions to show range.
Pie charts carry the least data of any Task 1 visual — often just five or six numbers per chart. That makes them feel easy, and it is exactly why weak answers stand out: with so few figures, the examiner sees immediately whether you can do anything with them beyond reading them aloud.

How do you describe a pie chart in IELTS Writing Task 1?
A pie chart divides one whole into parts. Everything you write should respect that frame: segments are shares of a total, not free-standing quantities. "Heating used 42%" is loose; "heating accounted for 42% of all household energy" is precise.
The exam almost never gives one pie chart alone. You will usually see two (the same categories at two points in time) or occasionally three or four. The comparison across charts — what grew, what shrank, what held — is the real task.
Read the charts before writing: identify the largest segment in each, the biggest riser, the biggest faller, and anything static. Those four observations power the overview and organise the bodies.
What is the best structure for a pie chart answer?
The four-paragraph plan holds, with the bodies grouped by segment behaviour rather than chart by chart.

The chart-by-chart split — everything about 2000, then everything about 2020 — is the structural mistake to avoid. It doubles your sentence count and hides every change. Keep each segment's two figures in one sentence: "heating's share fell from 42% to 32%".
What is the language of proportion for pie charts?
Three ingredients: verbs of composition, fraction paraphrases, and change language borrowed from line graphs for the movement between charts.

Rotate the composition verbs too: a segment accounts for, makes up, constitutes, represents or is responsible for its share. Using "was" six times in a row is the fastest way to a flat Lexical Resource score on a visual this small.
One accuracy rule: pair every fraction with the exact figure at least once ("32%, almost a third") or keep the fraction clearly approximate ("around a third"). A bare "a third" for 32% is fine; "exactly a third" is not.

The task below was written for this article as a teaching example in the exam's style — not a real or predicted question. "The pie charts show how household energy was used in Australia in 2000 and 2020."
Model answer (176 words):
The two pie charts break down household energy consumption in Australia by end use in 2000 and 2020.
Overall, heating dominated in both years but its share fell noticeably, while the proportion of energy used by appliances and for cooling grew. Water heating remained the second-largest category throughout.
In 2000, heating accounted for 42% of all household energy, and water heating a further 30%. Together, these two uses therefore consumed almost three quarters of the total, leaving appliances and lighting with 18%, cooling with just 5%, and other uses the remaining 5%.
Two decades later, heating's share had dropped by a quarter to 32%, although it was still the single largest segment. Water heating slipped slightly, to 27%. By contrast, appliances and lighting expanded to 25% of the total, and cooling's share more than doubled, to 11% — the largest relative change on either chart. Other uses stayed unchanged at 5%.
Why it works. The introduction paraphrases "how energy was used" as "consumption by end use" — new wording, same meaning.
The overview makes three proportional judgements — dominance weakening, two segments growing, one rank unchanged — with no numbers.
Body 1 owns the 2000 chart's heavyweights and adds value by combining segments ("almost three quarters"), which is selection, not recitation. Body 2 carries every change, keeps both figures in each sentence, and flags the standout relative change. Notice the composition verbs rotating: accounted for, consumed, expanded, slipped.
What if there is only one pie chart?
A single chart removes the time comparison, so the whole answer becomes ranking and proportion in one moment. The overview names the dominant segment and the smallest; the bodies group segments by size — the major shares in one paragraph, the minor ones in the other.
Comparison still drives every sentence, but now it runs segment against segment: "heating consumed more than water heating and appliances combined". Combining segments into a joint share is the strongest single move available, because it shows selection on a visual with very little data.
Tense follows the date as usual: a labelled past year takes the past simple, an undated chart of general composition takes the present simple. A lone pie chart is rare in the live test, but it appears often enough that the ranking pattern is worth rehearsing once.
What mistakes lose marks on pie chart questions?
The signature pie-chart failure is the clockwise list: reading the segments in drawing order, one flat sentence each. With only ten numbers available, an answer that merely repeats them cannot demonstrate selection — and selection is the criterion.
Second, ignoring the whole. Segments are shares, so sudden switches into absolute language ("energy increased") are inaccurate — the chart shows the share changed, not the amount. Stay in percentages unless the task gives totals.
Third, fraction abuse: calling 40% "almost half" stretches approximation into error. And the ever-present pair — a missing overview, and speculation about why shares shifted — costs here exactly as it does on every other visual. Our Task 1 mistakes guide ranks all of these by cost.
