How the IELTS Speaking band is worked out

One band per criterion is awarded for the entire interview, not per part. A strong Part 2 does not earn its own score, and a weak Part 1 is not isolated — the examiner forms one judgement per criterion across all three parts.

The four criteria are equally weighted and averaged to the nearest half band. Pronunciation is the one candidates most often assume is about accent: it is not. It is assessed on intelligibility and on features like stress and intonation, and a strong regional accent is fully compatible with band 8.

Fluency & Coherence is where most band 6 candidates lose the half band, and it rewards sustained, connected speech rather than speed. Long pauses to search for a rare word cost more than the word gains.

Average 6.25 → 6.5. Strong pronunciation alone cannot lift three criteria at 6.

Grammar is the single criterion holding this back from 7.0.

The classic memorised-vocabulary profile: a good word store, but pausing to retrieve it costs Fluency more than the vocabulary earns.

7 · 7 · 7 · 7	Band 7.0	A genuine 7. Band 7.5 needs two criteria at 8, so pick the two closest.
8 · 8 · 7 · 8	Band 8.0	Accuracy under pressure in Part 3 is almost always the last criterion to arrive.

IELTS Speaking scoring — common questions

How is the IELTS Speaking band score calculated?

Four equally weighted criteria — Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation — are each given a band for the whole interview, then averaged and rounded to the nearest half band.

Are the three Speaking parts scored separately?

No. The examiner awards one band per criterion for the entire 11–14 minute interview. A strong Part 2 cannot be scored on its own.

Does my accent lower my IELTS Speaking score?

No. Pronunciation is assessed on intelligibility and on features like word stress and intonation. A clear, strongly accented speaker can score band 8.

Do memorised answers help my Speaking band?

They usually cost you. Examiners are trained to spot rehearsed language, and the retrieval pauses it causes hit Fluency & Coherence — FC 5 with LR 7 averages only 6.0.

What is the fastest criterion to improve in Speaking?

Fluency & Coherence, for most candidates at band 6. It responds to a habit change — extend every answer with a reason and an example — rather than to new knowledge.
