Yes / No / Not Given
Yes/No/Not Given questions are like TFNG but specifically test your understanding of the WRITER'S VIEWS or CLAIMS — opinions, not facts. The passage will express a perspective; you evaluate if the statement agrees with it.
Step-by-Step Approach
- 1
Identify what the writer claims or believes in the relevant section.
- 2
YES: the statement agrees with the writer's stated view.
- 3
NO: the statement contradicts the writer's view.
- 4
NOT GIVEN: the writer does not express any view on this topic.
Common Traps to Avoid
Confusing Opinion with Fact
YNNG is about the writer's views, not verifiable facts. "The government should act" is an opinion.
If the passage argues "stricter regulation is needed" — YES agrees, "deregulation is needed" → NO.
Assuming the Writer's Bias
Do not assume the writer agrees with mainstream views. Find the exact position stated.
Just because a passage is about climate change doesn't mean the writer agrees human activity is the cause — you must find the explicit claim.
Band 8–9 Strategies
Find opinion markers: "argues", "believes", "suggests", "contends", "maintains".
The writer may disagree with widely held views — don't bring in outside knowledge.
NOT GIVEN is very common — the writer often doesn't express a view on every topic mentioned.
Time Strategy
Same as TFNG: 90 seconds per question, work in text order.
