Short answer: As of 2026, the principal applicant for New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category resident visa typically needs an IELTS overall band of 6.5 (General Training or Academic), or an accepted equivalent such as PTE Academic 58 or TOEFL iBT 79 — always confirm the current requirement on the official site.
The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is New Zealand's main points-based residence pathway for skilled workers, and meeting the English language standard is a non-negotiable part of it.
Immigration New Zealand sets a higher English bar for the principal applicant on skilled residence visas than for many other visa types, and — importantly — you cannot rely on having grown up in an English-speaking country to satisfy it.
This guide sets out the test scores INZ accepts, the lower threshold for partners and dependent children, and the non-test routes (citizenship, qualifications, work or study history) that can meet the requirement instead.
Every figure below is the published benchmark as of 2026; because immigration rules change, treat the official Immigration New Zealand page as the final word.
Accepted English tests and minimum scores
| English test | Minimum for the principal applicant (as of 2026) |
|---|---|
| IELTS (General Training or Academic) | Overall 6.5 or more |
| TOEFL iBT | Total 79 or more |
| PTE Academic | Overall 58 or more |
| Cambridge (B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency) | 176 or more |
| OET | Grade B or higher in each of the four skills |
| Partner / dependent child aged 16+ | IELTS overall 5.0 (or equivalent), or pre-purchase English lessons |
What this means for you
If you are the principal applicant, the practical target is an IELTS overall 6.5, averaged across the four skills. Two rules catch people out.
First, the test must be sat in person at an approved test centre and be no more than two years old at the time you apply; remote or "at home" tests are not accepted.
Second, unlike some visa categories, you cannot use an English-speaking background as evidence for skilled residence, so a passport alone will not do it.
There are still non-test routes: INZ recognises citizenship of Canada, Ireland, the UK or the USA; at least five years of work or study in one of those countries or in Australia or New Zealand; or a recognised qualification gained in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or the USA.
Partners and dependent children aged 16 or older face a lower bar — typically around IELTS 5.0 — and if they fall short, you can pre-purchase English language lessons for them as part of the application.
To reach 6.5 reliably, model your section scores with our band score calculator and rehearse the writing that most often drags the average down using the writing checker.
