The most important decision I've made so far was choosing to study engineering instead of medicine. My parents had always assumed I'd become a doctor, like my father, and for a long time I assumed the same. But in my last year of school, I did a work placement at a hospital, and I realised I didn't enjoy it at all. Meanwhile, I was spending all my free time building things and taking apart old electronics. Telling my parents was the hardest part. I was worried they'd be disappointed, so I prepared for days and explained my reasons very carefully. In the end, my father was surprisingly supportive. He said he'd rather I was happy than successful in the wrong job. It was important because it was the first time I made a major choice for myself, rather than doing what was expected of me.
