I'm going to talk about the time I helped an elderly neighbour learn to use a smartphone. She lives alone in the flat below mine. Her children all live overseas, and they'd bought her a phone so they could video call her, but she found it completely overwhelming. One afternoon she knocked on my door, looking quite frustrated, and asked if I could help. So for the next few weeks I went down every Sunday and we practised together. I wrote out simple instructions on a card, with big letters and little drawings of each button. The breakthrough came when she managed to call her daughter all by herself. She was so proud, and to be honest, so was I. It made me realise how easily we take technology for granted, and how isolating it can be for people who didn't grow up with it.
